A couple months ago I began a PhD program in Computer Information Systems at Arizona State University. Making the decision to change from the professional realm to the academic one was a huge step. Thus far it is has been very rewarding.
Today I got an email from a friend that touched on some topics that he thought might be of interest to me. It prompted me to consider what Information Systems is all about and how the study of it differs from what I might have expected.
IS at most schools is part of a business department and frequently associated with accounting. It sits somewhere between Computer Science, Business, and Sociology. As such it has somewhat of an identity issue. On any given day, you can be applying a technology lens to almost any field of study.
In my first couple of months some key areas of study for me have been the social networking aspect of Web 2.0, Artificial Intelligence, and structuration. Well, I better run, I have more reading to do (always lots of reading).
