IT management in Utah

A couple months ago I attended a breakfast put on by uita (uita.org). There was a forum of business owners who now run local IT companies but had previously run companies in New York, Chicago, and Silicon Valley. Here are some quick things they noted about Utah compared to these other places:

-There are no senior mentors. There are no 20 year veterans of big business IT or opportunities to learn from such people.

-IT company owners do not stick it out. If they strike it big, they go to a ranch and retire, and if things go bad they don't stick it out.

-The lack of senior IT mentors means that there is a lack of people who have the experience of passing through the "valley of death of business".

-For people who are not members of the predominant religion, it is a difficult place to transfer to. Most people in Utah turn to their families outside of work and neglect social activities that would interest people in other states (the arts, etc.).

-In other cities in the U.S., employees jump ship quickly. They work much longer hours and are concerned primarily with themselves, unlike it Utah.

-People are very loyal to their companies in Utah.

-The ethics of most people in Utah are very high.

-The supply of good sales people is depleted compared to 5 years ago.

-UTFC funds a lot of IT companies.
